General

The University of Florida is located in Gainesville, a university community of 210,000 people located in North Central Florida. In 1995, Gainesville was voted as the Best City in the United States by Money magazine. In 1996, and 1997 Gainesville remained in the top 10. The residents enjoy the facilities and resources of a large state university with an enrollment of 42,000 students located in a city which retains the atmosphere of a small college community.

The city is located approximately 60 miles from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. There are many local lakes, rivers, and springs available for skiing, diving, and fishing. The many attractions of Central and South Florida are within convenient driving distances. Airline service is provided by Delta and U.S. Air from the local airport to connecting flights in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Miami. There are active local theater and dance companies. An outstanding museum of art and a new performing arts theater recently opened on the University of Florida campus. There are a wide variety of art shows throughout the year in north central Florida. Private and public tennis courts, golf courses, swimming pools, and a network of jogging paths and bicycle trails are located in the city. The University of Florida athletic teams provide an abundance of spectator sports opportunities.

Many residents choose to purchase homes during their stay in Gainesville. A wide selection of two or three bedroom homes are available in a reasonable price range. A large number of homes and apartments are available for rental. The majority of housing is within a 5 to 20 minute drive from the hospital.
