Senior Elective in Otolaryngology

Course Goals
- To acquaint students with dx, tx, and follow-up of patients with head and neck cancer, otologic and laryngeal disorders, and pediatric and cosmetic/reconstructive problems.
- To provide students with exposure to clinical diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the head and neck.
- To review and enhance the students knowledge of head and neck anatomy, and laryngeal and auditory physiology.
- To train students to perform a detailed head and neck exam.
- To allow students to act as interns with a surgical subspecialty.
Course Setting
Outpatient setting at the Hampton Oaks (community based) and Shands ENT Clinics. Inpatient and surgical care at Shands Hospital. Students rotate with the otolaryngology residents participating in the outpatient, inpatient and surgical arena.

Course Goals
- To acquaint students considering careers in primary care fields with the management of the most common otolaryngologic disorders they will encounter in their practice.
- To better prepare students to independently manage patients with routine otolaryngologic disorders by allowing them to evaluate and treat such conditions under the supervision of a faculty member.
- To educate students as to the proper utilization of otolaryngologic consultation.
- To provide a detailed understanding of the management of otitis, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, hoarseness, tonsillitis, skin cancers, and hearing problems via small group discussions and direct patient care.
Course Setting
Outpatient setting at the Hampton Oaks (community based) and Shands ENT Clinics. Inpatient and surgical care are not emphasized but available to the student desiring a wider perspective.

For the rotation you may borrow Ear, Nost, and Throat Diseases, a Pocket Reference, by W Becker, HH Naumann, & CR Pfaltz. It is a brief primer on otolaryngology. It can be obtained from the Otolaryngology office and must be returned to receive a grade for the course.

All students are welcome to attend the resident didactic sessions, but only students rotating in July are required to attend. A lecture schedule is provided on this website. A copy of the schedule can be obtained from the ENT office.
